Carey Grammar (VIC)

Giving staff deeper insights into students' wellbeing

November 2025

Carey Grammar, an independent school in Victoria, introduced My Mind Check with Year 5 and Year 10 students to better understand and support student wellbeing. The platform complemented the school’s existing wellbeing practices, with check-in outcomes providing a valuable new layer of insight and enriching conversations with students. It’s a “no-brainer” — staff found the platform easy to use, and the guides and resources were “excellent and easy to follow.”

Initial success

Carey Grammar began check-ins with Years 5 and 10 — their largest intake years with many new students — initially focusing on these cohorts while familiarising themselves with the platform. Through this trial, the school found value in using check-ins to better understand and support students. They now plan to extend check-ins to students in Year 9, recognising this as a stage when students’ needs and experiences can become more varied and complex.

Before check-ins, caregiver consent was collected through the school’s usual online platform, and staff from the participating year levels took part in a professional learning session that introduced them to My Mind Check and its supporting resources. Staff responded positively to the process, feeling well-prepared and confident in their role.

Enriching wellbeing conversations with students

Immediately after check-ins, key wellbeing staff convened for a high-level review to identify any outcomes they felt might require an urgent or prioritised response. Rather than positioning outcomes as something separate to unpack, the school embedded their learnings into their ongoing wellbeing conversations with students.

Outcomes for Year 10 students were reviewed by their year level mentors, who incorporated these insights into their regular meetings with students — drawing attention to the outcomes and creating gentle opportunities for students to talk further if they wished. For Year 5 students, teachers took a similar approach, weaving in insights from My Mind Check to enrich their usual wellbeing conversations as opportunities arose.

Furnishing staff’s existing wellbeing strategies

My Mind Check offered an additional layer of insight that complemented staff’s existing knowledge and approach to student wellbeing. Outcomes provided a valuable perspective on how students perceive and report on their own wellbeing and were primarily used to guide in-school support. Staff integrated these insights into their everyday wellbeing practice, using them to further enrich and refine their support.

My Mind Check is a ‘no-brainer’

My Mind Check was described as a “no-brainer” in terms of ease of use, with staff finding the guides and resources “excellent and easy to follow.” The clear directions enabled all twenty-eight participating staff to confidently deliver the check-ins within their classes, without needing any of the additional support on offer.

The school plans to continue check-ins for Years 5 and 10 in Terms 1 and 4 as part of their ongoing wellbeing approach. They encourage other schools to give My Mind Check a go, having found it a practical and insightful addition to their wellbeing work.
