Insight-driven parent-teacher conversations using My Mind Check

How My Mind Check can help educators provide better informed insights and outcomes during parent-teacher interviews, giving students a chance to thrive both inside and outside of school.

Educators and teachers play a vital role in the support of their students’ mental health and wellbeing. Their support can significantly impact a young person’s ability to thrive academically and emotionally.

Parent-teacher interviews have long been a cornerstone of educational communication, but their potential to help support a student’s mental health is often overlooked. A parent-teacher interview can be a powerful platform to discuss the emotional wellbeing, behavioural patterns and overall mental health of a young person.

Teachers and educators are uniquely positioned to help identify struggling students that may fly under the radar or go unnoticed. Many students often mask their feelings, making it harder for teachers to effectively identify and respond to their barriers to learning.

Sometimes these barriers may be hard to identify. Examples are students who:

  • appear reserved yet want to do their best
  • struggle to find the words that describe how they are feeling about school, their learning and their relationships with their peers
  • feel embarrassed or are reluctant to tell someone that they are finding things hard.

Parent-teacher interviews often involve thorough preparation, including various learning checkpoints to illustrate each student’s progress. Caregivers can often have high expectations, wanting educators to provide as much information and insights as they can during these meetings.

These insights rely on educators understanding and monitoring each student’s overall wellbeing through classroom observations, as well as open conversations with the student and their caregiver(s). But for some students, a more targeted approach may be needed, by providing them a safe space to reflect on their own mental health.

Recent research has demonstrated that online mental health check-ins at school can be an effective way to identify at-risk young people, and can actively improve student mental wellbeing over time.

My Mind Check enables schools to perform 10–15-minute check-ins on their students’ wellbeing throughout the school year, helping schools understand whether students may benefit from further information or attention.

"Many students often mask their feelings, making it harder for teachers to effectively identify and respond to their barriers to learning."

Our digital tool can help educators identify those students who may potentially be masking their feelings, or may feel more comfortable responding to a survey as opposed to having a face-to-face conversation. This information can supplement what educators may already know or have observed in the classroom, helping them better understand how a student is feeling about their own mental health.

The connection between academic success and mental wellbeing is undeniable. My Mind Check can help educators provide better insights and outcomes during parent-teacher interviews, giving students a chance to thrive inside and outside of school.
