There are many reasons that may explain why a student might report internalising problems.
Students with internalising difficulties often feel worried, sad or lonely, or are overly self-critical. Feeling anxious or sad can be a normal response to certain situations. However, students with internalising problems find it difficult to manage inner negative thoughts and feelings.
Students with internalising problems may have difficulty expressing their concerns and pinpointing exactly what is bothering them. Without support, these feelings of worry and sadness may start to significantly affect the student’s life. They can impact their relationships and ability to learn and engage. They can cause them to stop doing the things they need and want to do; for example, completing homework (such as avoidance or spending too time perfecting it) and making new friends.
